Under fire yet undeterred by the very clear and present danger, Lance Corporal Leakey ran across the exposed slope of the hill three times to initiate casualty evacuation, re-site machine guns and return fire. His actions proved the turning point, inspiring his comrades to fight back with renewed ferocity. Displaying gritty leadership well above that expected of his rank, Lance Corporal Leakey’s actions single handedly regained the initiative and prevented considerable loss of life.
The description of the event as presented by the MOD is typically restrained in its description of the events leading to Joshua Mark Leakey being announced by General Sir Nicholas Carter as the recipient of the Victoria Cross at a ceremony to be held in Buckingham palace.
Victoria cross
The Victoria cross is a highest award in the British armed forces for bravery. The medal itself is made from melted bronze of captured Russian guns in the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimea War. most of its recipients have been honoured after their death in action.
Action
The full description of the events gives a full view of the actions and bravery of Joshua Mark Leakey which has lead to the Victoria cross announcement.
The actions for which Leakey was awarded the Victoria Cross occurred on 22 August 2013 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. A routine joint patrol composed of British paratroopers, US Marines and Afghan soldiers had targeted a village to search for illegal weapons. Having been flown into the area in Chinook helicopters, the patrol was attacked by machine gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades soon after dismounting. Leakey’s helicopter had landed on a hill near the village and he, with three other paratroopers and an Afghan soldier, was to provide fire support for the main segment of the patrol. From their vantage point, his section could see the attack and heard over their radio that someone had been injured. Leakey ran up the hill to assess the seriousness of the attack and came to the conclusion that urgent action was needed. Though he was only a lance corporal, he took control of the situation and led his section down to the group under attack.
Having reached the group under attack, he gave first aid to the wounded US Marine Corps captain and began the process of evacuating him from the battlefield. While under fire, he returned to the machine guns that his section had left at the top of the hill. He moved one to a better position to fire at the attacking Taliban even though he was under constant, accurate fire (bullets were ricocheting off the weapon he was carrying). His actions inspired other soldiers to join in the fightback.
While he was manning the machine gun, he was also shouting updates of the situation into his radio.Having realised that more than one machine gun would be needed to effectively fight back the insurgents, he allowed his gun to be taken over by another soldier. He then ran once more through heavy fire to retrieve a second machine gun, position it in a suitable site, and then manned it to fire at the Taliban.
Joshua Mark Leakey is the second member of his extended family to be honoured in this way for actions against the enemy , His second cousin twice removed, Nigel Leaky , was posthumously awarded the medal during the second world war.
SQR group has a long tradition in working with and honouring members of armed forces and indeed can count many in its rota of staff and associates . We congratulate Joshua Mark Leakey , his family and members of his unit and regiment.

The French government have maintained a high security level for some time and given concern regarding some French nationals of Muslim faith travelling to fight or having strong sympathies with Jihadi sentiments especially since the rise of ISIS one must assume that a lot of energy has been directed at monitoring sections of the Muslim community.
An update by French intelligence authorities advises that France has stopped five terror attacks and brokenup 13 networks linked to extremists in Syria despite this the number of young people travelling to Syria has increased sharply.
This weekend we have had to witness at least 13 people being injured, some seriously, after the driver of a car targeted passers-by in various parts of city of Dijon.
According to witnesses he was shouting to the effect that he was acting in support for the “children of Palestine” during his attacks that lasted over 30 min. There has been report of the driver having had mental problems .
The day before another man, stabbed three policemen in town of Joue-les-Tours after shouting Islamic slogans the 20-year-old attacker was shot dead at the scene.
Radical Islamic is thought to be behind the attacks but it seems that there were no clear links between the attackers. There has been other attacks similar to this using vehicles in England, Scotland recently in Israel and now in France.
What makes such acts so difficult to counter is that they are random, acted out by individuals with no direct links to organisations and they have previously not displayed any serious signs of being radicalised.
The main difficulty for the authorities is a to admit publicly that there are no effective security measures against un associated random acts of terror, especially if the perpetrators have no direct links with any recognised organisations.
Surveillance and intelligence are the key weapons to counter act any terrorist act but the nature of these acts make an impossible demand of even the most in-depth and intrusive surveillance and intelligence gathering methods.

The internet has long been viewed as a convenient media for communication and propaganda for organised crime, terrorism.
There has been many chapters in this story with one side or the other claiming advantage by using new techniques in encryption, techniques to avoid detection or to monitor traffic.
The Snowdon revelation gave everyone a glimpse to the monumental scale of monitoring and data collections by governments this has also altered organised crime and terrorist alike as to review their communication’s security.
The governments have long viewed the private internet companies as a weak link, it appears that in America there has long existed a secret arrangement with internet companies this has sometimes meant that backdoors were left open so governments could gain access without having to request or enforce legal notices.
In UK the home secretary about to introduce new measures inserted in the new Counter-terrorism and Security Bill.
One issue being addressed is the IP internet protocol addresses that every devise is assigned on the internet. The firms are being formally asked to maintain a log of IP addresses and who has used them so that through IP matching and tracing police and security services can deal more effectively with problems of identifying suspects on the internet.
The Counter-terrorism and Security Bill will also include the ability of refusing entry to nationals returning from front line activity in support of banned organisations.
It remains to be seen if the bill will be passed wholly or if it will be modified or buried as the so called snooper charter was previously due to coalition disagreement.

Prime Minister Cameron’s encounter with a jogger has sparked a concern about his close protection squad.
The incident took place when the prime minster left a meeting and was on rout to his vehicle.
The concern has been raised by the fact that the man ran across the road onto the pavement past and in between three close protection officers from the police without even being noticed and then physically ran into the prime minster.
It appears that the incident was innocent but had it no been so, the nature of the news about the outcome would be very different.
Given the high state of the threat level in UK and that the prime minster is a highly valued target for terrorist as the head of government in UK and in theory at least he enjoys the highest level of protection this incident highlighted serious short comings in his security.
The incident will no doubt lead to a review of training and protocols of his team at the very basic level as this security breach highlights the fact that very basics rules of close protection were over looked by his team.

The 47-year-old taxi-driver from Manchester who was taken hostage last December while on a humanitarian aid convoys to Syria has become the latest victim of ISIS. His tragic and brutal end has been filmed and used as a gruesome piece of PR.
There are a number of reasons why these murders are made so public but firstly they points to an organisation with an eye on influencing domestic and foreign policies of its adversaries and its continued attempt to replace Al Qaeda as the leading jihadi organisation.
His public murder will no doubt intensify the call for more direct action against the group but many heads of states in the western camp have already promised their countries that they will not commit to ground troop deployment.
Airpower is costly and mostly ineffective against irregular armies such as ISIS so ultimately the question of a large well equipped manned intervention has to be addressed.
Ground troop deployment causes a serious challenge for the coalition members some of whom were pressurised by USA e.g Saudi Arabia, UAE etc to participate with token and as yet unproven involvement with bombing raids.
On the ground the Kurds are bearing the brunt of the fighting and Iranians have been involved secretly for some time with supplies and reorganisations and front line specialised troops. The Iraqis have mustered their forces with support of Shia militias and have presented a stronger front.
ISIS seem to have an active policy to confront the west directly as soon as possible no doubt sensing that various deals being struck behind the scenes might affect their long term strength, for example a possible arrangement with the Syrian regime by the west.
The British prime minster has spoken of generational fight and Americans have spoken of degrading and then destroying the group as a long term strategy but time might not be on the side of the west if as predicted a revenge terrorist attack is carried out by ISIS or their sympathisers in Europe or USA.
In such a situation the pressure for the west to put ground troops into action may be too much to bear.
