Close Protection USA

Close protection USA

Close Protection in USA a reality check

Let’s take a look at some facts and figures so that we can identify the real Threats and Risk and not the falsely perceived namely Terrorism which accounts for 31 deaths on average in USA with the 9/11 taken into account.Close protection in USA is about more about professional approach to the fundamentals and basics than the glory hugging action hero gestures and posturing .

Some 13,286 people were killed in the US by firearms in 2015, and 26,819 people were injured (those figures exclude suicide]) Those figures are likely to rise by several hundred, once incidents in the final week of the year are counted. Source:  Gun Violence Archive

The US death toll between 1968 and 2011 surpasses all wars ever fought by the country. There were about 1.4 million firearm deaths in that period, compared with 1.2 million US deaths in every conflict from the War of Independence to Iraq. Source: Politifact.

There were 372 mass shootings in the US in 2015, killing 475 people and injuring 1,870. A mass shooting is describing a single shooting incident which kills or injures four or more people, including the assailant. Source: Mass Shooting Tracker

There are thought to be about 300 million guns in the US, owned by about a third of the population so that is 106.6 million people with guns.

There were 372 mass shootings in the US in 2015, killing 475 people and wounding 1,870. These events take place in cinemas, shopping malls and all public.

source the Mass Shooting Tracker.

There were an estimated 1,165,383 violent crimes (murder and non-negligent homicides, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults) reported by law enforcement.)

There are approximately 1.4 million active gang members comprising more than 33,000 gangs in the United States.

Source 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment FBI

343 well-armed anti-government militias numbering over 100.000 members, many have been involved in armed stand offs with federal and local forces.

Added to that there are 800,000 armed police with a stablished reputation of using their weapons aggressively.

The main threat in USA is guns and crime and occasionally the law enforcements. The figures make it clear that this is no Walt Disney landscape and you need to develop a good local knowledge for example of crime hotspots, type of crimes, active gangs, and their area of operation and methodology.

It is essential to take into account active, current threats rather than the news driven high profile threats that frankly are statically should be very low on the scale of priorities.

Essential tools for close protection operative in USA is an accurate threat and risk assessment, thorough planning, well-practised situational & spatial awareness and hopefully a gun!

lone wolf

Lone Wolf

This is a name given to the type of attack that causes the security professionals with the greatest challenge.

It’s a paradoxical name as wolves generally act in packs. The lone wolf will have only  loose connection to identifiable organisations or persons who pose security threats, he might have been influenced by ideas, individuals or self-generated delusions.

The lone wolf follows no particular pattern in particular though it has been suggested after some study that many suffer from mental and social disorders.

They come from the general population and do not belong to a particular social and racial group.

The lone wolf does not belong to a command structure, he decides and he plans and he carries out the act.

Their motives can be staggeringly varied political, religious, seeking fame or playing out a fantastical delusion based on all of the conceivable motives.

Lone wolf can be a white supremacist, Jihadi or just an angry young man!

This as can be understood very  difficult to detect and responded to in a timely manner in fact luck can be the biggest factor in detecting such individuals, that leaves responding which can only be based on speed , efficiency and dedicated units in the right place and the right time ,here is the element of luck again!

The terrorist groups have not be slow in utilising the lone wolf and very carefully do not connect directly and concentrate on using social media to agitate ,call out for acts or radicalise and praise.

They have had a head start on use of psychological techniques in order to motivate individuals to commit extreme acts of violence on others and on themselves.

They have also manage to create a lone wolf mentality in small groups, where small group will act in complete independence and randomness with almost no tangible association or connection with an identifiable organisation, this is different from the small cell system of old where at least one person in the cell had a veiled connection to an organisation and targets and timing and logistics would be sourced or directed and a leader or a commander could be identified upon examination.

The mass trolling for data and intelligence across all communication networks social and other wise by governments and their agencies is an attempt basically  to get Lucky!

Victoria cross

Announcement

Under fire yet undeterred by the very clear and present danger, Lance Corporal Leakey ran across the exposed slope of the hill three times to initiate casualty evacuation, re-site machine guns and return fire. His actions proved the turning point, inspiring his comrades to fight back with renewed ferocity. Displaying gritty leadership well above that expected of his rank, Lance Corporal Leakey’s actions single handedly regained the initiative and prevented considerable loss of life.

The description of the event as presented by the MOD is typically restrained in its description of the events leading to  Joshua Mark Leakey being announced  by  General Sir Nicholas Carter as the recipient of the Victoria Cross at a ceremony to be held in Buckingham palace.

Victoria cross

The Victoria cross is a highest award in the British armed forces for bravery. The medal itself is made from melted bronze of captured Russian guns in the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimea War. most of its recipients have been honoured after their death in action.

Action

The full description of the events gives a full view of the actions and bravery of Joshua Mark Leakey which has lead to the Victoria cross announcement.

The actions for which Leakey was awarded the Victoria Cross occurred on 22 August 2013 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. A routine joint patrol composed of British paratroopers, US Marines and Afghan soldiers had targeted a village to search for illegal weapons. Having been flown into the area in Chinook helicopters, the patrol was attacked by machine gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades soon after dismounting. Leakey’s helicopter had landed on a hill near the village and he, with three other paratroopers and an Afghan soldier, was to provide fire support for the main segment of the patrol. From their vantage point, his section could see the attack and heard over their radio that someone had been injured. Leakey ran up the hill to assess the seriousness of the attack and came to the conclusion that urgent action was needed. Though he was only a lance corporal, he took control of the situation and led his section down to the group under attack.

Having reached the group under attack, he gave first aid to the wounded US Marine Corps captain and began the process of evacuating him from the battlefield. While under fire, he returned to the machine guns that his section had left at the top of the hill. He moved one to a better position to fire at the attacking Taliban even though he was under constant, accurate fire (bullets were ricocheting off the weapon he was carrying). His actions inspired other soldiers to join in the fightback.

While he was manning the machine gun, he was also shouting updates of the situation into his radio.Having realised that more than one machine gun would be needed to effectively fight back the insurgents, he allowed his gun to be taken over by another soldier. He then ran once more through heavy fire to retrieve a second machine gun, position it in a suitable site, and then manned it to fire at the Taliban.

Joshua Mark Leakey is the second member of his extended family to be honoured in this way for actions against the enemy , His second cousin twice removed, Nigel  Leaky , was posthumously awarded the medal during the second world war.

SQR group has a long tradition in working with and honouring members of armed forces and indeed can count many in its rota of staff and associates . We congratulate Joshua Mark Leakey , his family and members of his unit and regiment.

armed contractors

Close Protection and war zones

Close Protection and war zones

Many close protection operative are tempted by the cash incentives and the drama and excitement of the war zones. Certainly there has been a shift  in market place with the governments withdrawing forces and visible presence from such areas due to public reactions to casualties and costs.

The legitimisation of the armed private security contractors in recent times has given birth to a completely new industry. It wasn’t long ago that such activities was conducted secretly and was generally regarded as illegitimate, now governments in particular  that of USA have an open policy to use armed private contractors for various tasks.

The private security contractor does not benefit from public support or sympathy, they also lack  in most cases  the benefits the regular soldier relies upon , such as legal framework when on deployment overseas,  governmental level of support in logistic , medical and intelligence and not to mention being part of an a recognise and established national  armed forces.

In short the private security contractor is exposed to more risk and threat and  with very few tools to mitigate them strategically or tactically.

With the influx of service men from many countries into the armed contractor industry who are willing to work for less fees the financial rewards have certainly taken a down turn.

Though the article is entitled close protection and war zones make no mistake when in deployment overseas into war zones you are no longer a bodyguard in its civilian context which by its very title expresses a positive and protective motive and you are easily distinguishable, but for all intent and purpose you are an armed private contractor.

Armed security contractors perform many tasks many of which are outside the remit of a bodyguard and you will be indistinguishable from the  local variety of guns for hire .You will potentially be  escorting individuals associated with questionable motives, histories and despised by many for good reasons and if all of that means nothing as long as you get paid then the moral ground is no longer the field you walk on and as such you are fair game for judgement by people who will view you with hostility and will target you with the same vigour as they will the individuals you are assigned to and remember you will have very little to fall back on in the way of support.

So if you are ex-military and just miss the action and nothing else matters then go forth, but if you are a civilian close protection operative stay put and work within a civilian arena.
